The Lucky Ones

Millions of dogs are homeless or abandoned in the United States, given up on by their owners or born on the streets.  Animal shelters cannot keep up with the demand.  There are too many dogs and cats needing shelter.  Too many dogs and cats needing homes.  Many of these shelters -- those with the highest burden -- are located in areas where adoption rates are low and spay/neuter rates are even lower.   They are forced to euthanize to create space.  They make decisions daily about who will live and who will not.  These "high kill" shelters need help -- and that is where animal rescue groups step in.   They bring hope.  They bring resources.  And, most importantly, they bring forever homes.

Production on The Lucky Ones began in June 2013 and wrapped in November 2013.  The film centers around Lucky Dog Animal Rescue and the organization's vast network of volunteers and partner facilities.  It follows the long journey that many homeless animals take to find their forever homes.  It begins in the shelters and on the streets and follows the dogs until they find their forever homes. The film is a documentary not just about the animals, but also about the tireless efforts of hundreds of volunteers who touch their lives in that journey.

The Lucky Ones will premiere in San Juan, Puerto Rico on March 29.  Stay tuned for details on how to buy tickets.

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue is a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing homeless and abandoned animals, primarily dogs from high-kill shelters. By working with committed volunteers, foster homes, local veterinarians, trainers, and boarding facilities, we are able to rescue hundreds of animals every year, provide them with loving temporary care, and find them well-matched, carefully screened forever homes.  We rescue these dogs from places where they have no hope of being saved, places where there are few resources and even fewer adoptions.  Our Lucky dogs and cats come from all over the south and even as far as Puerto Rico.  We want to end the cycle that results in pet abandonment so we also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, positive behavior training, and good nutrition.

LDAR reaches large numbers of potential adopters through weekly adoption events throughout DC, Maryland and Virginia, and with a large online and community presence. With a base of over 1,000 volunteers working tirelessly to find these animals homes, LDAR has been able to save over 10,000 animals since its founding.
